More than Grit
Scarred by burns from an overturned lantern, eleven-year-old Sissy plows through hardships to scratch together deposit money, which she knows her parents can’t afford, so her family’s farmhouse can be wired for electricity. Experience and fears taunt her that if she fails, her home will burn down. Except…it’s not that easy.
She ignores rumors that Old Man Morton is dangerous and wrangles a secret business deal with the Great War veteran. She will help with his farm chores in exchange for eggs, which she plans to sell.
Sissy must face a school bully, a friend’s betrayal, and broken promises. And the electric company refuses to set up poles.
Some dreams require more than grit.
There was a time in our nation's history when 5 dollars was an astronomical sum, news and entertainment came by way of radio broadcasts in the living room, and nighttime tasks were carried out by kerosene light. That history comes alive in this story, narrated by young Sissy, but her encounters with bullying, prejudice, and fears can still resonate with young readers today. The story also highlights the importance of genuine friendships, of community working together, and of forgiveness and grace--all values that are timeless. I highly recommend this book that families can enjoy together.
